We spent the day in the French Quarters, attending church at St. Louis Cathedral, visiting the Cigar Factory and the French Market, and eating at Cafe Maesperos. During our walk along the river, I met several homeless men. This one caught my eye and called out, "Hey, pretty lady." Of couse I stopped! As I chatted, the others walked on. This is James. He is originally from Arkansas, but came down to the coast to remodel a J.C. Penney in Mississippi in 1997. He stays because he likes the people and can make some money. I didn't have anything to give him, but he sang me a song anyway--"Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone." He made me smile. A little farther down the walk, I met two more homeless men waiting for the rats to come out--they were familiar with 19 rats with 3 broods and apparently lived on the bench they were sitting on. Happy to have each other for companionship. It makes one realize that simplicity can bring happiness. I pray God's blessings on all these restless souls.
