We began our vacation today. When we arrived at the condo, I noticed a red-headed woodpecker digging for insects on this dead tree. I thought it was a male, but now I understand that the male and female look alike. While I was shooting, a juvenile (not a female) joined him. In any event, I've never seen a juvenile, so it was a fun capture.

Another gray day, but this time we were visited by a downy woodpecker.
Cold, gray and dreary, that's how the day has been. But the birds have been hungry and not easy to scare off. I managed to catch this little bit of color in the grayness. We played hide-and-seek for a while and just as I decided to give up and get out of the cold, he peeked around the corner. Not the best shot, but good enough to bring me into the warmth of the house. Wrap up everyone, snow and ice is on the way!
Although I made it to Sunday School, I was still feeling a bit under the weather. Thinking a little sunshine and vitamin D might help in my recovery, I scoped out the huge oak across the street that hosts a small bird village. I waited for the red headed woodpeckers or blue jays I had seen recently as they shooed off a king snake (kind of hoping for the king snake), but was happy when the curious woodpecker spent a little time scoping me out too.
Since it was such a pretty day, I decided to get on up and try to find some frozen water to take a picture of. As I walked out the door, this little fella called out to me ... he'd been avoiding me all week .... Thankfully, I had the right camera and the right lens ... he even stayed long enough to let me move to a better position and then strike a pose ... yay!
